The MNJIO&RCC of this state had its origin as the Radium Institute & Cancer Hospital and was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as a near 40 bedded cancer hospital in 1955. The Govt. of India accorded the status of Regional Cancer Center on 12/03/1996. In compliance with the requirement of Govt. of India to accord RCC status to our institute, the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh declared MNJIO&RCC as an Autonomous Institute under State Govt. vide G.O.Ms.No.128 M&H, dt.21/3/1996 and the institute is registered as society to be governed by Governing Council headed by the Hon'ble Chief Minister as Chairman.The Govt. has approved the memorandum of association, rules & regulations, general byelaws and financial byelaws vide G.O.Ms.No.382, HM&FW (M2) Dept., dt.05/10/1996.
The MNJ Institute, established in 1955 with a 50-bed Radium Institute & Cancer Hospital, has grown into a 750-bed State Cancer Institute and apex teaching hospital. It provides comprehensive tertiary cancer care servicing over 1.5 lakh patients annually and registering approximately 15,000 new cases each year. With 24 departments, 18 wards, 4 ICUs, 1 Pediatric ICU, a Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and 8 Modular Theatres, MNJ offers advanced care and conducts 16 academic programs with over 260 students annually. A new 300-bedded cancer block with a built-up area of 2.32 lakh sq. ft. is under development. The budget outlay for Financial Year 2024-2025 is Rs.126.65 Crore. MNJ Institute has demonstrated substantial growth, with patient services increasing to 17.68 lakh by November 2024. Notable achievements since December 2023 include the sanction of 75 HR positions for new Cancer Block, over 200 robotic surgeries and over 150 bone marrow transplants. Additionally, the institute inaugurated an interventional radiology Cath lab, initiated a new student hostel, and conducted 125 Cancer detection camps using a mobile screening bus, further strengthening its commitment to comprehensive cancer care and early detection.
MNJ Institute harnessed with state of art technology equipment like Robotic Surgical System , Modular Operation Theaters , PET CT , 128 Slice CT Scan, MRI, Three (3) Linear accelerators, Gamma Camera, Digital Mammography, Molecular Lab, Immuno Histo Lab equipment, OT equipment , Mobile Cancer Screening Bus etc..
