Overview

1.WHAT IS PALLIAITVE CARE ?

»
Palliative Care aims at improving the quality of life of patients with life-limiting illnesses like Cancer, advanced AIDS, Lung, Heart and Kidney diseases.
» We do this by treating pain and other symptoms, and providing psycho-social and spiritual support to patients and their care-givers.
» According to the WHO, palliative care should be an integral component of comprehensive cancer and HIV/AIDS program in developing country.

2. THE NEED FOR PALLIAIVE CARE

»

Every year, about 200,000 people in Andhra Pradesh are diagnosed to have cancer. About 70% are diagnosed as having advanced cancer and need pain relief and palliative care.

»

AP has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in India with 5.2 lakh people living with HIV/AIDS and around 50-70% of them would benefit palliative care.

»

Less than 1% has access to any palliative care or a pain relief program. We are here to make a difference – to relieve suffering, restore dignity and comfort people living with a life–limiting disease. In pursuit and in practice of our mission, we prevent and relieve suffering and promote quality of life, at every stage of life, through patient and family care, education, research and advocacy.

»

Palliative care is moving from a niche area of interest for a few, to a philosophy and practice that affects us all. Integration within health and social systems is essential to realize this vision
